Course overview

A behavior plan can be procedurally beautiful and still fail on Tuesday morning in a second-grade classroom. This course examines environmental fit as an ethical obligation rather than a nice-to-have, and gives you a repeatable way to assess it before you write the plan.

We work through the ethics code sections that apply, the questions to ask during intake, and how to document your reasoning when you recommend a smaller, more sustainable intervention over a more ambitious one.

Learning objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define environmental fit and distinguish it from treatment integrity and social validity.
  • Identify the sections of the BACB Ethics Code that bear on recommending interventions the environment cannot support.
  • Describe an intake and assessment sequence that surfaces contextual constraints before plan development.
  • Apply a structured decision process for selecting between a technically ideal plan and a contextually sustainable one.
  • Document environmental-fit reasoning in a way that withstands funder, family, and supervisory review.

Intended audience

  • BCBAs and BCaBAs writing treatment plans across home, school, and community settings
  • Supervisors coaching trainees through ethical decision-making
  • Clinicians needing an Ethics CEU that connects to daily casework

RBTs may take this course for general professional learning, but this activity does not award BACB RBT PDUs unless specifically identified as an RBT professional-development event.

Requirements

  • A device with audio and a stable internet connection
  • Familiarity with the current BACB Ethics Code is helpful but not required

Course materials

  • Recorded guided discussion (approx. 60 minutes)
  • Environmental fit assessment checklist (PDF)
  • Three written case scenarios with discussion prompts
  • Annotated reference list
